St Albans Home for Children - Cessnock, NSW, Aistralia

Welcome to the fb site for all the kids that spent time at St Albans Home for Boys (became a childrens home in 1976). I am hoping that as time goes by, more and more will join and perhaps a reunion could be in order. RIP Ron Barry et al. Thank you!

St Albans initially started as a boys home, and in late 1970's, was integrated into a children's home (the girls arrived). Today it is a motel.

History (taken from the "Hunter Valley Travellers Rest" web site.

The original buildings of the Hunter Valley Travellers Rest were occupied by the St Albans Boys Home from 1963 to the 1980's and was run by the Church of England as a caring environment for boys who had no place to live.

There were many different reasons the boys were placed here at St. Albans, including orphans, boys whose mothers and fathers were sick or had drinking problems, and therefore unable to care for them. At any one time St. Albans was home to about 30 boys.

Over the years the buildings were used for various purposes including:

During 1980 - 1990 a local community centre and a preschool for 3 Years

The Present - A period of Transformation and Renewal

In 1991 the building went through a major transformation and the building were re-designed into the current Hunter Valley Travellers Rest & Courtyard Restaurant. It took two years of hard work dedication and the buildings were lovingly restored.

In 1993, the Travellers Rest was officially declared open. Over the years we have provided bed and breakfast to visitors and weary travellers in search of the Hunter Valley Wine Country experience It has always been a pleasure to welcome guests into our motel to enjoy a good nights sleep and a healthy morning breakfast.
